NEWS

📊 LATAM is positioning itself to become the world leader in podcasting

The folks at Libsyn published an article with data compiled from Edison Research, the IAB, Pew Research and several other sources to give a detailed look of where podcasting is right now. Among the data they shared:

  • Around 478,000 podcasts have published an episode in the last 90 days

  • There are 167 million Americans monthly listeners

  • The US podcast advertising market is expected to reach $3 billion this year, 17.6% more than last year

The article also presents data on Spanish-language podcasts:

  • Spanish-language podcasts represent around 5% of all active feeds worldwide, only behind English

  • Led by Mexico and Brazil, Latin America is the fastest-growing regional market in the world in number of listeners and is on track to become the global growth leader by 2027

  • 36% of internet users across 48 global markets report having listened to a podcast in the last month of 2026

What should you do: LATAM’s position as the global consumption leader by 2027 has been forecasted for a few years now, and the trend says it will happen. This does not mean by any chance that there are too many podcasts, it means there's room to grow. Take advantage of it.

And speaking of Spanish-language podcasts…

🇪🇸 The fight to be the biggest podcast in Spain

Our friends at Genuina Media published a ranking of this year's 20 biggest podcasts in Spain using public data such as YouTube views and Spotify followers. The Wild Project came in first with a median of 1.18 million views per episode, while El Podcast De Marian Rojas Estapé finished second by just 0.2 points. Two completely different podcasts, one video and the other audio-first (and not even on Apple Podcasts), but both with massive consumption numbers.

👂 The most-listened-to podcast genres are…

Edison Research data for Q2 2026 found that True Crime overtook Comedy as the most popular podcast genre among weekly US podcast audience. The genre was in fifth place back in 2019.

Meanwhile, on LinkedIn, María José Ortiz Martinez presented the first quarterly report of the Monitor Multimercados de Podcasting, where she compares rankings in Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Spain. Culture leads in Argentina and Spain, while Comedy leads in Mexico and Personal Development in Colombia.

🏀 The NBA team hit with heavy sanctions from the league after a podcast's original investigation

The NBA announced one of the harshest sanctions in its history after investigating fraud claims involving a team and one of its star players that were brought to light by a podcast. The information was shared in September 2025 on the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out. The former ESPN journalist found proof that Steve Ballmer, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, invested millions in a bankrupt company that later gave player Kawhi Leonard a contract, bypassing the league's salary cap. The NBA fined Leonard $700,000, Ballmer was suspended for a year, and the team will have to pay $30 million and loses five first-round picks.

Why it matters: this investigation wasn't done by a major network or newspaper. It was a journalist with big-media experience who now has the freedom to investigate independently. It's a great example of the impact investigative journalism can have and how well it goes hand in hand with podcasting.

🙌🏼 Podtalks 2026 was a success

Last week, our fellow podcaster Sunne held the Podtalks 2026 session in Barcelona. The event is an open forum to talk about podcasting, where everyone is a presenter and on the same level. It’s been called “the best” so far, and are already planning the one for 2027.

  • The importance of newsletters for podcasts is covered in Forbes, in an article by Frank Racioppi pointing out that newsletters are a high-ROI platform and a valuable tool for building integrated multimedia content hubs. We agree!

  • Our fellow podcaster Charlotte Bayala launched the trailer for Narratives of Care: Puerto Rico, a series based on conversations with family caregivers in Puerto Rico navigating dementia and cancer, which looks at the constants that remain regardless of culture or country. The season premieres October 6th.

TIPS, TRICKS AND STRATEGIES

📝 A podcast consultant’s marketing advice

Susana Medina is a podcast marketing consultant, who shared on her LinkedIn some marketing strategies for people who produce limited series after wrapping up her work on México Siniestro. The podcast reached #4 on Apple Podcasts Mexico, #1 in True Crime, and had 80% retention. Check out what she said:

  • If you invest in creation and production, you have to invest in distribution and promotion: Good content without a launch plan is just a well-produced secret

  • The investment is strategic: if you have a limited series, you have a small window to build momentum, so start early, execute your PR strategy and use social media to your advantage

  • Collaborate with those who already have the audience: instead of relying on the algorithm, Susana put México Siniestro in front of audiences interested in Spanish-language horror and true crime

Why it matters: limited series are powerful. They're specific episodes you can market constantly, and can help you grow. Even if you have a weekly or interview podcast, a limited series can be a vehicle to reach new audiences.

🤔 Check this out if you have an interview podcast

On his Threads profile, veteran podcaster Robb Dunewood argues that interview podcasts, by their very nature, aren't geared toward returning subscribers. According to Robb, interview podcasts depend on the listener wanting to hear the guest, while host-centered podcasts get consumed because the audience wants to hear the host.

It’s an interesting angle to consider for those with interview podcasts.

Interview podcasts have to be chosen every episode
