▶️ YouTube hits play on The Parent Trap again

Last week we talked about the podcast and YouTube Channel The Parent Trap which was shut down without warning or explanation. Last Friday, Podnews followed up on their original reporting saying YouTube finally reviewed the channel’s appeal and reinstated them. The Parent Trap is a parenting podcast with more than 2,000 subscribers and 150 videos with tens of thousands of views. On Qué Está Pasando en el Podcasting we talked about how the creator had to go viral and be covered by the biggest newsletter in podcasting just to get an answer from YouTube, something not all of us will be able to do.

🧐 The first analyses of "views" vs "engaged views" are here

Podtrac analyzed the difference between "views" and "engaged views" after YouTube's changes announced back in August 24. For YouTube, a "view" is counted from the first frame of a video, and an "engaged view" as soon as watching beyond the first frame or clicking on the video. After analyzing more than 84 million views, Podtrac found that:

  • 64% of the "views" on video podcast episodes in a playlist were "engaged views"

  • 58% of the "views" on podcast-related videos on a YouTube channel were "engaged views"

These numbers show that video podcasts retain better than the other videos on a YouTube channel, since people visit them with the intention of consuming them.

Related to this: Dan Misener of Bumper says they're seeing twice as many "views" on YouTube compared to "engaged views." He says that to roughly measure how many "engaged views" a video has, you have to cut the number of "views" in half.

🤝 Pat Flynn sells his company to a creator

Pat Flynn, entrepreneur, creator and author of the book Superfans, sold his company Smart Passive Income to creator and email marketing expert Liz Wilcox. Founded in 2008, Smart Passive Income is an education and community company for creators and entrepreneurs, focused on digital products, affiliate links and courses. The SPI podcast is one of the most successful in the world of digital entrepreneurship, having generated more than 80 million downloads. Liz Wilcox has over 10 years in email marketing experience and has generated more than a million dollars with her digital products. Wilcox becomes the owner and face of Smart Passive Income effective this week, while Flynn moves on to other passion projects. No details of the sale were shared.

Why it matters: as Lex Roman says in their article, Flynn could have sold SPI to a private investor and walked away with a barrel full of money, but he chose to protect not only the almost 20-year legacy of his brand but also the audience. It would be amazing to see more aquisitions like this.

🇵🇷 Podcast consumption in Puerto Rico

Market intelligence firm Gaither Hub shared a video on their Instagram about podcast consumption in Puerto Rico. According to them, from January to July the consumption incidence is 13%. At this same point last year it was 17%.

This made me really curious, since there’s no mention whether the consumption is weekly, monthly, audio or video. But we shall have answers, so stay tuned.

🌱 Second edition of the podcast trailer study

Trailer Park: The Podcast Trailer Podcast is an aptly named creation of Arielle Nissenblatt, where she shares and analyzes the best podcast trailers. The show has launched a three-part miniseries presenting a trailer study done by Coleman Insights, Nova Entertainment, Pantheon Podcasts and Arielle herself. They found that:

  • The trailer that immediately introduces the hosts and the podcast works best

  • Versions with a human voice are preferred, though by a very small margin, over the AI voice. Even so, the AI voice generated more intent to listen

  • Using a narrator's voice in the trailer is more effective than using the hosts' voices, specifically among adults aged 18-34, women and daily consumers

A tip: there's no reason to keep the trailer you made 6 months ago. If you need to, update it, change the format, experiment and see what’s most effective. (I'm writing this for myself 😅).

And speaking of Arielle, she and Lauren Passell will present "WTF is a Podcast in 2026," one of two keynotes at Podcast Movement 2026 in NYC. We will be seated.

❓Why do we have to watch podcasts now?

Writing an opinion column in Spanish newspaper El Plural, Amanda Ramos asks about the transformation of podcasting from what was originally an audio format into one adapted to visual elements. Ramos wonders whether the podcast could then evolve in two directions: the visual and the audible.

That's why maybe the interesting question isn't whether video podcasts are better or worse…the question is what kind of medium the podcast will end up being after its conquered by the image. Maybe two forms will survive under the same name. One meant for our eyes and the other modest and radically sonic.

AROUND THE INDUSTRY

  • Dan Granger, CEO of Oxford Road and one of the most visible figures in the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting, admitted on his LinkedIn that YouTube's announcement of their change in metrics felt like "a kick in the pants." Even so, Granger sees the announcement as further proof of the need for metrics standards like the ones the AMP proposes.

  • Netflix keeps adding podcasters to its lineup while YouTube offers millions and even production money to other creators so they publish first on its platform. They've also warned they won't give the promotional boost to creators who choose to publish on both platforms.

  • Speaking of YouTube, Todd Beaupré, the senior director at YouTube in charge of recommendations, notifications and everything that shows up around your video spoke in detail in an interview about how the system works and even cleared up myths and rumors about the algorithm.

TIPS, TRICKS AND STRATEGIES

🎥 Another look at the different ways to monetize your podcast

Jay Rose, SVP of sales and brand partnerships at Daylight Media, was direct about the ways podcasters can monetize without millions of downloads, in a conversation with a group of independent podcasters, organized by the hyperlocal outlet The Montclair Pod. His key points are:

  • Make an ad that doesn't feel like an ad: The goal is an integration so natural it reads like editorial content

  • Monetize your niche: Jay mentions that the most important metrics are: time spent listening and what he calls "true engagement," meaning how many listeners convert on the hosts' products, go to their events or cite the podcast as the reason they found a brand. That attribution is more valuable than anything an algorithm can generate

  • Regional, hyperlocal and community content wins: considered a great option for geo-targeted campaigns and for sponsors who want to reach specific markets

  • YouTube and video open up new monetization solutions: product placement, branded segments and even 360 integrations are the options

On Qué Está Pasando en el Podcasting we've talked about these strategies and we agree, but you have to be careful with some of them and we'll discuss that in the next episode.

🌱 Send your podcast to a bunch of platforms with one click

Buzzsprout announced this week that its users will be able to send their podcasts to 16 different directories, with just one click. The mission is to simplify the process of reaching a bigger audience and cut the time spent on tasks like these.

Remember that if your podcast isn't everywhere, you're losing audience.

🎬 Two interesting new tools

Overcaption is a free, offline translation and captions tool. It offers captions, an easy-to-use editor, line breaks and several languages and translations. No cloud involved, everything happens inside your hardware. $22 a month gives you access pro features.

And Studioeditor.io is an audio editor and soon to be video editor, free for creators. It offers multitrack editing, online recordings with up to three people and other features you’d expect from audio editing software. For $12 a month it has more advanced features like text-based editing and AI tools.

And a shoutout to a podcast website I found and really liked: www.venezolanospodcast.com. I loved that they give you the option to listen to the latest episode or a random one to help you discover something new. Nice work!
